Tamara Orlow holds a Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) from the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) from Princeton University.

She fell in love with carpentry after a summer job as a carpenter’s assistant on the shores of Lake Champlain. She enjoyed the constant challenges and problem solving that each new task required, and after a few years of working with her hands, it became evident she was not going to return to an office job if she could avoid it.

After working her way up to lead carpenter at a highly regarded design-build company, working frame-to-finish, Tamara decided her true passion was finish carpentry, partly because of the refined attention to detail it requires.

In 2014 she took the bold step and started Root Down Carpentry LLC so she could focus on kitchen installations and trim carpentry. In 2021 Root Down added a woodshop so she could expand the scope of services offered to include built-in cabinetry and bookshelves.
